Who can use the Distance Library Service (DLS)?
- Any student enrolled in a Distance course or paper is automatically eligible to use the Distance Library Service (DLS).
- Students registered with Disability Information & Support may also be eligible to use the Distance Library Service.
- Students living outside Dunedin, including PhD students and students on placement, can also apply to use the Distance Library Service. Email the Distance Library Service.
Contact the DLS to request...
- Research support.
- Advice and help accessing library resources including e-journals and article databases.
- Books posted to you at no charge.
- Journal articles and book chapters scanned and emailed to you at no charge.

Make a Request
Request and Renew material via the Library Catalogue
For obtaining items that are in the Library catalogue:
- Use Call Slip on the library catalogue to request items from any location including Dunedin branches (excluding Hocken), Storage, Canterbury Medical Library, Wellington Medical Library and Southland Campus Library. Select pick up location of Distance to have the item posted to you.
- Use Recall - to request an item currently on loan. Select pick up location of Distance to have the item posted to you.
- Renew books online
Use the DLS Request Form:
- For books not held by the University of Otago.
- Requesting scans of journal articles and book chapters.
Please remember:
- Send one citation per request - we do not process lists of requests.
- You may request a maximum of 20 items per week (including interloan).
- Provide full citation details, abbreviations slow the processing of
your request.
- Allow plenty of time for your request to arrive. We treat each request
on a first come, first served basis and do not offer an urgent service.
