EndNote: Instructions for Direct Export and/or Import Filters

Ebsco databases - see list

via Direct Export

  1. Select the records that you want to retain by clicking on the Add to folder under the reference
  2. Click on the Folder view link under the Folder has items section on the right of the screen
  3. Individually select the items that you wish to export or tick the Select / deselect all checkbox to export all references in the folder
  4. Click on Export (button of page with a green arrow)
  5. ChooseDirect Export in RIS Format (e.g. CITAVI, EasyBib, EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, Zotero) to directly import into EndNote (you will be prompted to choose the EndNote Library to import into).

via Import Filter

  1. Select the records that you want to retain by clicking on the Add to folder under the reference
  2. Click on the Folder view link under the Folder has items section on the right of the screen
  3. Individually select the items that you wish to export or tick the Select / deselect all checkbox to export all references in the folder
  4. Click on Export (button of page with a green arrow)
  5. ChooseDirect Export in RIS Format (e.g. CITAVI, EasyBib, EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, Zotero) and click on Save
  6. If prompted to open or save choose to save to your desktop
  7. Import this file into your EndNote library using the Refman RIS filter

EEBO (Early English Books Online)

via Direct Export

  1. Select the records that you want to retain by putting a tick in the boxes to the left of each reference
  2. Click on Marked Records in the Toolbar
  3. Click on the Download Records button in the top right of the screen
  4. Click the link to export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager
  5. When the file has been downloaded, either choose to open with Web Export Helper (default) or choose EndNote from the other available programs.
  6. Click OK, then follow the instructions given.

Emerald

via Direct Export

  1. Select the records that you want to retain by putting a tick in the boxes to the left of each reference
  2. Click on Go next to "Add to the marked list"
  3. Click on Marked Lists on the left
  4. Click on Select all
  5. Click on Export Options
  6. Click on Export to EndNote, Reference Manager
  7. You will be prompted to open with the Direct Export Helper - choose this option and the citations will be imported into EndNote

Factiva

via Import Filter

Note: Windows and IE only

  1. Select the records you want to retain by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each reference
  2. Ensure that the setting in the Display Options option to the top right hand side of the screen is Full Article/Report plus Indexing, otherwise the records will not be saved in the correct format for importing into EndNote
  3. Click on Format for Saving (disk icon) at the top left of the page. Select Article Format from the pop up bubble that appears. It may take a brief period for the saved records to load, depending on the number being saved.
  4. Factiva format
  5. Select Save As from the File menu in Internet Exzplorer
  6. Choose the disk location you want in the Save in drop-down list
  7. Enter a name in the File Name box
  8. Save as type: Text File (*.txt) and click on Save
  9. In EndNote select the File menu, then select Import
  10. Click on Choose File and select the file you just saved
  11. Select the Factiva (DJ) filter in the Import Option section
  12. Click on Import and the references will load into EndNote

Google Scholar

via Direct Export

Must set up first (on any web browser)

  1. Go to Google Scholar:  http://scholar.google.com/
  2. Click Scholar Preferences and scroll to the bottom of the screen
  3. At Bibliography Manager, select Show links to import citations into
  4. Use the drop-down list to select EndNote
  5. Click Save Preferences

    Internet Explorer

    1. Search for the item you wish to add to EndNote
    2. Choose an item and click Import into EndNote
    3. Click Save
    4. When prompted to Save As, choose the required disk location in the Save in drop-down list
    5. Enter a name in the File Name box
    6. Save as type: EndNote Import File and click Save
    7. When the ‘Download complete’ box appears, click Open
    8. Select an EndNote Reference Library and click Open
    9. The selected reference will import directly into your EndNote Library

    Mozilla Firefox

    1. Search for the item you wish to add to EndNote
    2. Choose an item and click Import into EndNote
    3. In the box ‘Opening scholar.enw’, select Open with
    4. Ensure the drop-down list is displaying EndNote and click OK
    5. Select an EndNote Reference Library and click Open
    6. The selected reference will import directly into your EndNote Library

Index New Zealand (INNZ)

via Import Filter

NOTE: If you want to select items from several pages before you Save, Print or E-Mail them, you must click Retain Selection before you move to another page

  1. Select the records you want to retain by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each record
  2. When you have selected all the records you want to save, select EndNote Citation as a download format from the Records box at the bottom of the summary screen
  3. In the Records column, click on All on page, Selected on Page or Selected all Pages
  4. Click the Print/Save button to Save the records
  5. Select Save As from the File menu in your browser frame
  6. Choose the disk location you want in the Save in drop-down list
  7. Enter a name in the File Name box
  8. Save as type: Text File (*.txt) and click on Save
  9. In EndNote select Import from the File menu. In the dialog box that appears select the file that was just saved, then select the INNZ filter. You may have to click on Other Filters to see the filter
  10. Click Import and the records will appear in EndNote

International Eric

via Direct Export

  1. Place ticks in the boxes of the records you wish to save
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the Full Display Format and the RefMgr, ProCite, EndNote Output Format and click on the Save button
  3. The Web Export Helper will open EndNote and import the records

via Direct Export

  1. Tick the checkbox for each record that you wish to save.
  2. Click on the Export Citation link at the top of the results list
  3. Click on the RIS file (EndNote, Procite, Reference Manager) link
  4. You will be prompted to open with the Direct Export Helper - choose this option and the citations will be imported into EndNotete

Leisure Tourism

via Import Filter

  1. Select the records to be downloaded into EndNote
  2. At the bottom of the screen choose "Full Record" then Export to EndNote
  3. Your EndNote software will be opened (if not already open), and you will be prompted to select the library into which you want to import the references
  4. If prompted to select a filter choose the "EndNote Import" filter
  5. The records will appear in EndNote

Library Catalogue

via Import Filter

NOTE: If you want to select items from several pages before you Save, Print or E-Mail them, you must click Retain Selection before you move to another page

  1. Mark the record(s) you want to Save by clicking on the checkbox at the left side of the record
  2. When you have selected all the records you want to save click on the Export botton at the top or bottom of the list
  3. Click on the Click to Export button
  4. Select Save As from the File menu in your browser frame
  5. Choose the disk location you want in the Save in drop-down list
  6. Enter a name in the File Name box
  7. Save as type: Text File (*.txt) and click on Save
  8. In EndNote select Import from the File menu. In the dialog box that appears select the file that was just saved, then select the Otago University Library Catalogue filter
  9. Click Import and the records will appear in EndNote

*Note: Due to bugs with exporting from the Library Catalogue better results may be obtained by exporting from Summon or by using a connection file to search the Library Catalogue directly from within EndNote.

Ovid databases - see list

via Direct Export

Direct downloading works on some Ovid databases (e.g. Medline). For the others you will need to use a import the citations in using a filter (see below)

  1. Select the records to be downloaded into EndNote
  2. At the top of the results set click on Export
  3. In Export To dropdown choose RIS
  4. Under Select Records to Display choose Complete Reference
  5. Click on Export Citation(s)
  6. Your EndNote software will be opened (if not already open), and you will be prompted to select the library into which you want to import the references
  7. Select the library and the references will be directly imported into EndNote

Ovid

via Import Filter

To save search results to a file to import into EndNote from Ovid databases follow these steps:

  1. Select the records to be downloaded into EndNote
  2. At the top of the results set click on Export
  3. In Export To dropdown choose EndNote
  4. Under Select Records to Display choose Complete Reference
  5. Click on Export Citation(s)
  6. Save the file to disk
  7. Open EndNote and select import from the File menu
  8. Select the file that was just saved to disk
  9. For the import option select the relevant Ovid filter (e.g.MEDLINE (OvidSP)). If you don't have the latest filter for the Ovid database you are exporting from you may need to download it from the EndNote Website
  10. Click on import

PEDro

via Import Filter

  1. Select the records to be downloaded to EndNote by clicking Select
  2. Click Display Selected Records
  3. Click Email Results and email the selected results to yourself
  4. Log in to your email
  5. Open the email with the subject line PEDro Search Results
  6. Copy the text from the body of the email, starting from AU – to the last line of the text  DATABASE-, ending with .org.au
  7. paste the text into a text editor and Save as a text file (.txt)
  8. In EndNote, select Import from the File menu
  9. Click Choose  File and select the saved text file
  10. Select the Pedro filter as the Import Option.  If the Pedro filter is not already showing in the pull-down menu, select Other Filters…, then select Pedro from the list of filters and click Choose
  11. Click Import and the selected results will appear in EndNote

 

 

ProQuest databases - see list

via Direct Export

  1. Select the references to be downloaded by clicking the checkbox next to them
  2. Hover over the Export/Save link at the top of the results screen to display the export options
  3. Click the ProCite, EndNote, or Reference Manager link under the ‘Export to:’ options
  4. A window with Export options will open.  Check that ProCite, EndNote, or Reference Manager is selected, then click Continue
  5. If a ‘File Download’ window appears, click Open
  6. Your EndNote software will be opened (if not already open), and you will be prompted to select the library you want to add the References to and they will be directly exported there.

via Import Filter

  1. Select the references to be downloaded by clicking the checkbox next to them
  2. Hover over the Export/Save link at the top of the results screen to display the export options
  3. Click the RIS link under the ‘Export to:’ options
  4. A window with Export options will open.  Check that RIS is selected then click Continue
  5. A ‘Opening proquestcitations.ris’ window will appear, click Save
  6. A ‘Save as’ window will appear.  Select desktop as the place to save the file.  Name the file then click Save.  If a ‘Download complete’ window appears, click Close
  7. Open your EndNote Library
  8. Under the File menu, select Import then select File…
  9. An ‘Import File’ window will appear.  Click Choose… and select the RIS file you saved to your desktop then click Open – the title of the RIS file will appear in the ‘Import file’ box
  10. Select RefMan (RIS) filter from the ‘Import Option:’  pull-down menu, then click Import and the records will appear in your EndNote Library. Note: If it is not already showing in the list of filters, select Other filters… from the pull-down menu and choose RefMan (RIS) from the list of filters available.

PubMed

via Import Filter

  1. After you have performed your search on Pubmed and marked the records which you wish to download, Select File from the Send To drop down menu
  2. Choose the MEDLINE format
  3. Click on the Create File button
  4. When prompted choose to open with the ResearchSoft Direct Export Helper
  5. EndNote will open and you may be prompted to choose a filter - select the PubMed (NLM) filter
  6. The citations will be imported into EndNote

ScienceDirect

via Direct Export

  1. When you have retrieved your records, mark the references that you want to save by clicking on the checkbox at the left of each record
  2. Click on the Export Citations link at the top of the Results summary screen
  3. At the Export option, select Citations + Abstracts
  4. For the File Format, select RIS format (for Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote)
  5. Click on the Export button
  6. Your EndNote software will open automatically (if not open already) and you will be prompted to Select a Reference Library
  7. Select a library and the references will be imported directly into it
  8. EndNote 8 and above may prompt you to choose an import filter before the records are imported. If this happens choose the "Refman RIS" filter

SciFinder Scholar

via Direct Export

  1. When you have retrieved your records, mark the references that you want to save by clicking on the checkbox at the left of each record
  2. Click on the Export link at the top of the Results screen
  3. Select Citation export format (*.ris) as the Citation Manager
  4. Enter a File Name
  5. Click on the Export button*
  6. When prompted choose to open with the ResearchSoft Direct Export Helper
  7. The citations will be imported into EndNote

* Note: If using Internet Explorer to export records from SciFinder Scholar you may need to add SciFinder to your trusted sites for the export to be able to proceed. To do this go to Tools -- Internet Options -- Security and set the sliding bar security level for "Trusted sites" to Medium-low. Next, click on the "Sites" button and add *.cas.org into the list of trusted sites (you may need to untick the "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" checkbox first).

Summon

via Direct Export

  1. Select desired records by clicking on the folder with the plus sign at the top right of the citation
  2. When you have selected all the records you want to save, click on the Saved Items link at the bottom of the page
  3. Click on the EndNote button in the top right of the window
  4. When prompted choose to open with the ResearchSoft Direct Export Helper
  5. EndNote will open and the citations will be imported

Te Puna (NZ National Library)

via Import Filter

NOTE: If you want to select records from across several screens before you Save, Print or E-Mail them, you must Retain Selection before you move to the Next screen

  1. Select desired records by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each reference
  2. When you have selected all the records you want to save, select Detailed as a download format from the Select Download Format box at the bottom of the summary screen
  3. In the Records column, click on either Selected on Page or Selected all Pages
  4. Click the Print/Save button to Save the records
  5. Select Save As from the File menu in your browser frame
  6. Choose the required disk location in the Save in drop-down list
  7. Enter a name in the File Name box
  8. Save as type: Text File (*.txt) and click on Save
  9. In EndNote select Import from the File menu. In the dialog box that appears, select the file that was just saved, then select the Te Puna filter
  10. Click Import and the records will load into EndNote

Web of Knowledge databases - see list

via Direct Export

  1. Select desired articles by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each article, then click on the Add to Marked List button at the bottom of the screen
  2. Click on the Marked List button at the top of the page
  3. On the Marked Records page, confirm your selection and select the fields to be included
  4. Click on the Export to Reference Software button
  5. If using Firefox you will need to click "OK" at this point.
  6. EndNote will start if it is not already running
  7. Select the library into which you want to import the references
  8. The references will appear in EndNote

via Import Filter

  1. Select desired articles by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each article, then click on the Add to Marked List button at the bottom of the screen
  2. Click on the Marked List button at the top of the page
  3. On the Marked Records page, confirm your selection and select the fields to be included
  4. Click on the Export to Reference Software button
  5. Select Field Tagged in the Save to file drop down menu
  6. Click Save to file
  7. In EndNote select Import from the File menu. In the dialog box that appears select the file that was just saved, then select the Web of Science (ISI) filter to import the records into EndNote
  8. Click Import and the records will appear in EndNote

Wiley InterScience (Cochrane library)

via Import Filter

  1. Select desired articles by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each article, then click on the Export Selected Citations button at the bottom of the screen or Export All Results at the top and bottom of the screen.
  2. Choose the export type you want; either citation or citation and abstract. Leave the file type as PC.
  3. Click go and save the file when prompted. Ensure the file is saved as a .txt file
  4. In EndNote select Import from the File menu. In the dialog box that appears select the file that was just saved, then select Cochrane Library(Wiley) as the Import Option filter, which will import the records into Endnote.
  5. Click Import and the records will appear in EndNote
